Isotopes, isotones, isobars refer to series of nuclides having one same number, resp. Z, N, A. Therefore one can speak about isotopes of sodium, or isotones at N=82, or isobars at mass 144. Nuclide designate one specific combination of neutrons and protons, e.g. 87Rb. The SUNAMCO commission of the IUPAP has pointed to this misuse already in 1987 in a document named: "Symbols, Units, Nomenclature and Fundamental Constants in Physics". In page 15 one can read: 2.5.1 Nuclides A species of atoms identical as regards atomic number (proton number) and mass number (nucleon number) should be indicated by the word 'nuclide', not by the word 'isotope'. Different nuclides having the same mass number are called 'isobaric nuclides' or 'isobars'. Different nuclides having the same atomic number are called 'isotopic nuclides' or 'isotopes'. etc... II - NEWS FROM EXPERIMENTS ON MASSES The Braunschweig-Mainz Collaboration / Karl-Ludwig Kratz June 2000 Already several years ago, a Braunschweig-Mainz collaboration determined Qbeta values of medium-mass fission products, first at the TRIGA-reactor at Mayence and then in close collaboration with the group of Juha Äystö at the IGISOL mass separator at Jyväskylä. The results of these measurements are given in the AMDC as a TeX file "experimental/qbeta.tex" with two tables: table 1 with the results obtained at Mainz and table 2 with the data taken at IGISOL. III - ENAM-2001: 3rd CONFERENCE on EXOTIC NUCLEI and ATOMIC MASSES / Peter Dendooven August 2000 The 3rd International Conference on Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses, ENAM2001, will be held in Aulanko near the city of Hämeenlinna, Finland on 2-7 July 2001. The Aulanko natural park is in southern Finland, 100 km north of Helsinki. The site follows the tradition of the ENAM conferences and is surrounded by some of Finland's most beautiful nature, lakes and forests. The conference venue, Hotel Aulanko, is renowned for its 60 years of tradition as a magnificent location for conferences and special occasions. The programme will consist of invited review talks on major developments in the area of exotic nuclei and atomic masses, plus selected oral and poster contributions on important experimental and theoretical topics. Fields to be covered include: * Atomic masses and fundamental constants * Fundamental symmetries and interactions * Moments and radii * Forms of radioactivity * Direct reactions and nuclear spectroscopy * Nuclei at the drip lines * Cluster phenomena * Nuclear structure and shapes * Fission * Heaviest elements * Nuclear astrophysics * Experimental developments * Traps for radioactive isotopes * Applications of exotic nuclei The ENAM2001 Conference is organized by the Department of Physics, University of Jyväskylä. More information can be found on the ENAM2001 web site at http://enam2001.jyu.fi/.
