II - NEWS FROM THE ATOMIC MASS EVALUATION Following several demands, a set of graphs for "Separation Energies" and "Decay Energies" have been added to the AMDC. See directory: masstables/graphs95/. Also added are graphs for differences between experimental and theoretical masses for two models. III - NAMING OF THE CHEMICAL ELEMENTS The names and the chemical symbols of the elements 104 to 109 have been finally adopted by the Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry (CNIC) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). (Pure and Applied Chemistry, vol.69 - 1997 - p.2471-2473). They differ from those recommended by the same Commission a few years before, and that were used in the evaluations AME'95 and NUBASE'97. It results in some shuffling of the names and symbols, that may cause confusion in the near future. At AMDC we'll be as careful as possible to try to avoid such confusion. In advance we apologize if any will occur in the future and recommand the user to always double check these few names. Z old names new names 104 Dubnium Db Rutherfordium Rf 105 Joliotium Jl Dubnium Db 106 Rutherfordium Rf Seaborgium Sg 108 Hahnium Hn Hassium Hs Elements at Z=107 Bohrium (Bh), and Z=109 Meitnerium (Mt) have their names unchanged. New versions of the NUCLEUS-PC program and of the jvNubase JAVA applet with corrected names will soon be available. IV - NEWS FROM EXPERIMENTS ON MASSES The MISTRAL Experiment / C. Toader Sept 1998 Since its installation at ISOLDE/CERN, in August 1997, the MISTRAL spectrometer has passed two important tests proving its reliability. First, in November 1997, the separation of isobars in the 27-30 mass region showed the good mass resolution of this experimental set-up. The second test on systematic effects carried on in July 1998 was conclusive and made it possible to obtain our first significant results with the mass measurements of an isotopic chain (23Na - 30Na). Data analysis is in progress but the preliminary results show that the last three isotopes (with half-lives 30-50 ms) should be obtained with improved precision. More news on this experiment will be available shortly at: http://www-csnsm.in2p3.fr/massatom/mistrpres_en.html. V - NEWS FROM THE THEORETICAL MASSES Mass calculation of Z>N nuclei incorporating deformation effect / M.Avotina, K.Erokhina, I.Lemberg April 1998 Masses of 509 nuclei were calculated in the frame of semiphenomenological shell model which takes into account deformation effect. Two alternative systems of beta_2 values were used. In the first case beta_2 values were calculated employing expression given by J.Janecke. In the second one beta_2 values were used which were obtained in the frame of macroscopic-microscopic mass model and published in ADNDT, V.59, No.2(1995). The table of mass predictions calculated with above-mentioned assumptions as to the values of beta_2 and also with assumption that beta_2=0 is available from the Atomic Mass Data Center (AMDC) as postscript file "theory/gkdef.ps" and also as ascii file "gkdef.asc". VI - DISPLAYS OF NUBASE In the frame of the educational aspects of the program NUCLEUS (for PC computers), a new feature has been added, to be used preferably on a fast PC (200 MHz or more). It is a 3D-engine to interactively fly over the valley of stability. Complementary information is given in file (ascii) "nucleus/nucleus.status".
